St. John's Church

Outreach to Youth

God works in mysterious ways! Just over a year ago on a cold ‘snow day’ a certain group of youth in Peasedown had nothing to do but throw snowballs at passers-by on the main road. Andy Day, from the Methodist Church, overheard mumblings and grumblings about the youth in a queue for the tills at Tesco. However, instead of joining in, he decided to do something positive and offered the youth hot chocolate in the church.

Jump forward a whole year and its quite amazing what God has been doing, especially for the youth whom church is quite alien! As a result of the Methodist Church offering hot chocolate to some troublesome teenagers on a cold ‘snow day’, members of both St John’s and the Methodist Church now run a thriving club on Tuesday evenings. With no big structural agenda, we have seen up to 20 youth enjoy tea and toast, darts, air hockey, weights, the occasional film, and the world cup on TV at these regular and laid back sessions. On occasions, some have engaged in conversations about God and at their request, have been prayed for. One particular lad had a very painful leg which was taking time to heal after an accident. He said ‘You can pray for me if you want’ and the next day exclaimed how he had had his first night without pain since the accident happened.

Independently of Tuesday evenings, a Home Group from St John’s went out ‘treasure hunting’ on the 8th June 2010 and saw 13 young people make a commitment to Christ.

There has been some overlap between these two groups, with trips to skateboard parks culminating in further conversations about faith and even prophetic words being given. As a result, a ‘discipleship’ group has started for those wanting to know and experience more of God.

I don’t think any of us could have imagined what was going to happen this year in terms of ‘outreach to youth’ but we pray that what God has started, He will bring to completion – so watch this space! In fact, don’t just watch….. do join us, but don’t expect to follow some tried and tested formula, we’re all out of our depth and anything could happen!
