St. John's Church

The Carlingcott Trust

The PCC of Peasedown St John was very blessed in 1988 when it received two legacies from Tom West, a former resident of Carlingcott.

The first of these had a value of £5,000 in 1988 and was invested as “The Tom West Fund”. This fund was used for the general benefit of the parish by the PCC until 2008, by which time inflation meant the capital was very small and the Charity Commission gave permission for the fund to be wound up and the proceeds included in the general fund of the PCC.

The second legacy became known as “The Carlingcott Trust” and initially £163,380 was invested “for the general religious purposes of the parish of Peasedown”. This money was invested in the Church of England Central Board of Finance and provided an important source of income for the PCC for many years. Occasionally, as the capital value increased, money was taken from the fund for capital projects in the church e.g. new lighting and sound systems and work on the church spire.

In 2009, with investment income falling, the Trustees decided to use the proceeds of the trust to invest in a house in Laxton Way as a way of protecting the capital and to provide a better income for the church through rental income as well as providing a home for a church worker.

We can see how the generosity of Tom West’s legacies continues to play an important part in the work of our church today.
