Safari supper raises almost £750 for village church - 12th Feb '10
Parishioners are celebrating after a successful safari supper in Wellow last week which raised almost £750 for their local church.
St Julian’s Church in Wellow has been trying new and radical ways of raising money over the last few months – to both support the work of the church, projects in the community, and mission activities oversees.
Before Christmas, Church member Libby Kerr decided to arrange a safari supper for people living in and outside of Wellow. She commented:
“The last time we held a similar event was 15 years ago in Wellow. Because there has been a huge turnover in the village’s population in that time and the average age has dropped considerably many people had not experienced the excitement of a safari supper before.
In total, almost 80 people came and took part – which is amazing considering the total population of the village is under 500 people.
Throughout the night, 20 Hosts and Hostesses prepared starters and main meals and 11 individuals made puddings and deserts.”
Taking part in the event was Church Leader the Revd Matthew Street, who commented:
“As a community church, we at St Julian’s are always exploring new ways to bridge the gap with local residents and to strengthen the role of the church in village life.
Libby’s work certainly paid off last week. Many people told me how much they enjoyed themselves and got the chance to catch up with people they hadn’t seen in months.”
Throughout 2010, St Julian’s Church is looking at ‘Bridging the Gap’ as its theme. Over the coming months it will be putting this into practice with various activities and community events in Wellow.
