Celebrating wonderful Wellow - 2nd June '10
One Somerset village will be putting itself up for show in June, as local villagers have arranged an entire week of celebrations.
Wellow, well known for its community spirit, will host a week of Flower Festivals, concerts, family camping and other events to celebrate life in the village.
Called Wonderful Wellow Week, the idea was initially thought up by St Julian’s Churchwarden Pauline Preddy. She commented:
“Wellow is a wonderful place to live. Because of it, a group of us have got to together to celebrate by organising a week full of events and activities for both people who live here and those who don’t.
In the first instance, we wanted to host a series of fundraising events for our church, but its grown much bigger now with the whole village getting involved.”
Wonderful Wellow Week will start on Friday 18th June at 2pm with a Flower Festival in St Julian’s Church and run for a total of ten days.
Home to one of the oldest churches in England, Wellow has a long history which attracts historians and heritage lovers to the village on a regular basis.
Churchwarden Colin Tremellen commented:
“St Julian’s Church has its origins in the 12th century, although the current building dates from 1372. It was built by Sir Thomas Hungerford, the first speaker of the House of Commons.
Because there is so much history in our village we are organising two history tours so people can find out more about our heritage.”
Events during Wonderful Wellow Week, for the public, will include:
- Flower Festival
- Open Gardens and Art Studios
- History Tours
- Church Concert with the Bath Community Gospel Choir
